Fibroids

Uterine fibroids, also known as leiomyomas or simply fibroids, are non-cancerous growths that develop in the uterus. They are very common and can range in size from very small to very large. Fibroids can be single or multiple and can grow inside the uterus, on the outer surface of the uterus, or within the uterine wall.

Fibroids can cause a range of symptoms, including heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain or pressure, frequent urination, constipation, and back pain. Some women with fibroids may also experience infertility or complications during pregnancy. However, many women with fibroids do not experience any symptoms at all.

The exact cause of fibroids is not known, but they are thought to be influenced by hormonal factors, such as estrogen and progesterone. Other risk factors for fibroids include age, family history, and obesity.

Symptoms of fibroids can include heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain or pressure, frequent urination, constipation, and back pain. Some women with fibroids may also experience infertility or complications during pregnancy.

Fibroids can be diagnosed through a physical exam, ultrasound, or MRI. A biopsy may also be necessary to rule out other conditions.
